Maruti Suzuki sells over 30 lakh units of the Alto in a span of 15 years and 6 months.
Ever since its launch in the year 2000, the Maruti Suzuki Alto has become a household name in India. Now, after being on sale for nearly 15 and a half years, the hatchback has added yet another feather in its cap – the Alto has crossed the 30 lakh sales milestone.
For over 10 years in a row, the entry-level hatchback has reigned atop the sales chart as the country’s top-selling car. While the Alto has faced stiff competition from its rivals over the years, none of them were able to match its sales numbers, let alone dethrone it from the top spot. That’s probabbly because for a majority of Indians looking to buy an entry-level hatchback, the Alto still clicks as the default choice.
Of the 30 lakh units sold, over 3.8 lakh Altos have been exported to over 70 countries including Srilanka, Algeria, Chile, UK and Netherlands. The remaining units have been sold in the domestic market.
At present, Maruti sells the Alto in two versions – 800 and K10. The former comes powered by an 800cc, three-cylinder engine developing 47bhp and 69Nm while the latter has a 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine with a max power output of 67bhp and 90Nm of peak torque. Both the versions come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox while the K10 is also offered with AMT (automated manual transmission). CNG is available in both the versions as well. The Alto is also the only vehicle in its segment that comes with optional driver airbag on all the variants.
Commenting on the development, Mr. R S Kalsi, Executive Director, Marketing & Sales, Maruti Suzuki said, “Alto has constantly evolved to reflect the changing India. While Alto’s true essence lies in its remarkable fuel efficiency, performance, attractive price and low maintenance, it has a zippy and sporty design that appeals to customers. Over the years, Maruti Suzuki has kept the brand rejuvenated with latest technology, features and design. Alto is being offered with features – airbag and Auto Gear Shift – at par with higher segment cars. These initiatives have helped enhance the brand’s connect with its customers and maintain its popularity.”
