On Independence Day last year, Mahindra & Mahindra entered the electric vehicle segment with its five born electric SUVs, all of which are based on the brand's new INGLO EV skateboard platform. These 5 SUVs will be sold through two new sub-brands – XUV.e and BE. The XUV.e range of models will go on sale first, with the XUV.e8 scheduled for release in December 2024, followed by the XUV.e9 in April 2025. Whereas, the BE.05 and the BE.07 will follow suit in October 2025 and April 2026, respectively. As India marks its 77th Independence Day today, i.e.,15th of August 2023, the Mumbai-based automotive manufacturer has unveiled its much-anticipated Thar EV concept at its annual Futurescape event in Cape Town, South Africa. Known as the Thar.e, the newly unveiled electric concept car makes a radical departure from the classic Jeep CJ-like front fascia of the existing Thar.

Mahindra Thar.e: Design
The Thar.e will be developed from the ground up and would not be an electric derivative of the current Thar SUV, according to Mahindra. The front end of this Mahindra electric car is defined by squarish LED headlights, a blocked-off rectangular grille with Thar.e emblazoned across, and revamped vertically stacked tail lamps with an LED setup. Next to the headlamps is a 'Thar.e' badging on the left side of the grille. Moreover, the front of the electric vehicle also bears flat sections with neat horizontal lines.
Retaining its off-road credentials, the Thar.e includes increased ground clearance, robust skid plates, and all-terrain tyres. In addition, it also receives aerodynamic improvements for enhanced range and efficiency.
Mahindra Thar.e: Underpinnings
The brand's new INGLO-P1 platform will serve as the foundation for the Mahindra Thar EV. The INGLO electric platform or modular electric skateboard will include a uniform cell-to-pack technology and a common battery pack design. Plus, it will make use of both Prismatic and Blade cell configurations. On offer will also be an augmented reality-enabled heads-up display, 5G network capability, edge-to-edge screen, and OTA updates.
Mahindra says that the INGLO platform has been designed with the objective to achieve a full 5-star Global NCAP safety rating once the production versions of the cars based on this platform are launched.
Mahindra Thar.e: Powertrain
In comparison to the XUV.e8, the Thar.e is expected to come powered by two battery options - a 60kwh and an 80kWh battery pack, in conjunction with Volkswagen-sourced electric motors – one on each axle – to enable the 4WD function. Speaking of performance, the electric powertrain is likely to offer instant torque delivery, resulting in quick acceleration.
Mahindra Thar.e: Interior
Inside, the Thar.e flaunts a spacious cabin that ensures ample legroom and headroom. Interestingly, you can hose down the car's cabin to clean it out after off-roading. Furthermore, the Thar.e has A.R. Rahman-developed 75 sounds, from opening the door to different drive modes.
Mahindra Thar.e: Availability, Pricing
The XUV400 is the only electric Mahindra SUV currently offered in India. And this Mahindra Thar electric SUV will be the second spin-off to make its way to the company's EV line-up. Expect the Thar EV to go on sale in the first quarter of 2025 in the Indian market. In terms of pricing, the new product is expected to stand in the range of Rs 20 lakh to Rs 25 lakh. Prices are ex-showroom.
