Mahindra Thar Waiting Period Goes Beyond 16 Months in India
Priced at Rs 13.77 lakh (ex-showroom), the petrol-powered Mahindra Thar 2WD currently has a waiting period of up to 22 weeks.
The current-generation Thar was launched with all-wheel-drive in the Indian market in 2020, and since then, it has been one of the best-selling models by Mahindra and has been in high demand. Offered in 2WD and 4WD options, the Mahindra Thar currently has a waiting period of up to 70 weeks (more than 16 months). However, this applies only to the rear-wheel-drive variants of the Thar. For those not aware, Mahindra launched the Thar 2WD in January 2023, and within a month of its launch (both diesel and petrol variants), its waiting period shot up to over a year. Fast forward to November 2023, the carmaker is still facing the problem of plenty. The waiting period for the recently launched Thar 2WD diesel is currently 70 weeks, while the petrol-powered Thar 2WD has a waiting period of up to 22 weeks (more than five months).

The Mahindra Thar is available with two engine options – a 1.5-litre diesel with a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol unit with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The former produces 117bhp and 300Nm of peak torque, while the latter offers 150bhp and 320Nm.
Mahindra Thar 4WD Waiting Period
The waiting period for both petrol and diesel variants of the Thar 4WD is about 24 weeks (6 months), according to market reports. The 4x4 version gets two engine options: a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, which churns out 150bhp and 320Nm, and a 2.2-litre diesel unit, which produces 128bhp and 300Nm. Both engines come mated to a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic transmission.
Mahindra Thar SUV: Features
Feature-wise, the Thar comes with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, along with halogen headlights with LED DRLs, steering-mounted controls, electrically controlled AC, removable roof panels, and cruise control. In terms of safety, the Mahindra Thar gets dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, hill descent control, traction control, rear parking sensors, and a front seat belt reminder.

Mahindra Thar: Price, Market Rivals
The Thar 4x2 has a starting price of Rs 10.98 lakh, which goes all the way to Rs 13.77 lakh. Still, it’s significantly less than that of the 4x4 versions. Meanwhile, the petrol version of the Thar 4x4 costs between Rs 14.04 lakh and Rs 16.27 lakh, while the diesel version is priced from Rs 14.60 lakh to Rs 16.94 lakh. All mentioned figures are ex-showroom. In terms of market rivalry, the Mahindra Thar goes against the likes of the Mahindra Bolero, Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki Jimny, and Mahindra Scorpio-N.
