Mahindra Thar Variant Lineup Updated; Convertible Top Models Axed
Post the update, the Mahindra Thar AX(O) 1.5-litre diesel RWD hard top stands as the sole entry-level AX model in the portfolio.

Mahindra has rejigged the variant lineup of the Thar, bringing notable changes to the popular off-roader’s portfolio. All convertible top variants have been discontinued as part of this update, leaving buyers with hard top and fixed roof options. The move signals a strategic shift towards enhancing production capacity as customer demand increasingly leans towards more robust and weatherproof configurations. While the convertible top added a distinct lifestyle appeal to the Thar, its removal simplifies the range and aligns with evolving market expectations. The refreshed lineup continues to target adventure seekers while broadening its mainstream appeal. Meanwhile, reports suggest Mahindra is preparing a mid-life facelift for the Thar, internally known as the W515. The refreshed model is expected to borrow design cues from the 5-door Thar and introduce new features like a factory-fitted sunroof on hard top versions, a bigger infotainment touchscreen, and a fully digital instrument cluster.
Mahindra Thar Variant Lineup Rejigged: Key Details
Mahindra has overhauled the Thar’s variant lineup, slashing the number of available variant options from 19 to just 11. As part of this revision, the brand has dropped the top-tier LX convertible models, along with the AX 4WD and LX 4WD variants featuring an open differential. Of the eight trims that have been discontinued, two were petrol-powered while the remaining six were diesel versions. It is important to highlight that these changes exclusively impact the 4WD offerings, with the RWD range remaining untouched.

Unlike the 2WD models, the 4WD variants are available with both six-speed manual and automatic transmission options.
