Since its launch in October, the Mahindra Thar has received 50,000 bookings. The Thar currently has a waiting period of around 6 – 10 months.
In just over six months since its launch, Mahindra has received over 50,000 bookings of the Thar. The second-generation model that went on sale in October received 9,000 bookings in the first week of its launch itself.
The increased demand is a result of the fact that Mahindra was able to change the image of the Thar in this new iteration. It is no longer just a no-nonsense off-road machine; it now has equal focus on creature comforts. This dual aspect of the Thar's personality really seems to have worked for the brand in the Indian market. Sadly, the Thar, today, comes with a painfully long waiting period of nearly 6 – 10 months, depending on the city.
Mahindra managed to secure more than 20,000 bookings within the first month of its launch. Such unanticipated demand resulted in a long waiting period even before deliveries commenced in November. Thankfully, the brand was quick to realise this and increase production from 2,000 units/month to 3,000 units/month in January. But the increase in production has only resulted in bringing down the waiting period from 10 months to 6 – 7 months in select cities. So far, Mahindra has been unable to meet the high demand for the car and has only sent over 12,000 units of the Thar to dealerships since November.
As of now, the Thar is offered in two trims – AX Optional and LX – both of which can be had with either a diesel or a petrol heart. The AX Options now starts at Rs 12.10 lakh, while the LX's prices start at Rs 12.79 lakh.
