For more than a year, the Mahindra Thar five-door has been one of the most awaited SUV launches in the country. The upcoming model is scheduled to make its debut next year and a production-ready version was recently spotted undergoing testing on the Indian roads. Now, in a recent development related to the offroader, the leading homegrown carmaker has registered seven monikers as trademarks. With this, it appears that the company is in the process of deciding on a name for the Thar 5-door production model. The revived Armada is one of seven possible names, currently being linked to the forthcoming SUV. Among the seven trademarked names for the car are Thar Armada, Thar Savannah, Thar Gladius, Thar Cult, Thar Rex, Thar Roxx, and Thar Centurion.

Given its long history in the Indian market, the 5-door model may be dubbed the Thar Armada. For those who are unaware, it was a well-liked SUV that dates back to the 1990s and was sold in India for about ten years. It was eventually mostly superseded by the enduring Bolero.
Mahindra Thar 5-Door: Exterior Changes
In addition to its new name, the Mahindra Thar 5-door will significantly differ from the 3-door model in several ways. A bunch of external modifications, like a multi-slat front grille, improved LED headlights, tall pillars, new alloy wheels, a revamped bumper, a single pane sunroof, vertical taillamps, a spare wheel mounted on the tailgate, and of course, two more doors, have been revealed in spy photos of test mules. It will have a boxy profile with a flat roofline.
Mahindra Thar 5-Door: Powertrain Options
There will likely be two engine options available for the 5-door Thar: a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine. The former produces 150bhp of maximum power and 300-320Nm of peak torque, whereas the latter belts out 130bhp and 300Nm of torque. Given that the upcoming 5-door Thar will be substantially larger than the 3-door Thar, power and torque outputs may vary. Along with 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrain options, prospective customers can opt for a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. It is not certain yet if the smaller 1.5-litre diesel engine will be installed in a 4x2 setup like the 3-door Thar.
Mahindra Thar 5-Door: Features
On the feature front, a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, connected car technology, a more comfortable front armrest, a reworked steering wheel, and speakers positioned in the ceiling are among the anticipated improvements. Even though the addition of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) may raise the cost of the car, certain customers may find this feature appealing. Other conveniences may include dual-zone climate control, a digital instrument panel, rear AC vents, and cruise control.

Mahindra Thar 5-Door: Expected Price
The new Mahindra off-roader is expected to retail for between Rs 15 lakh to Rs 18 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom) when it goes on sale at some point next year. The SUV will directly compete with the Maruti Suzuki Jimny when it is released in India.
Furthermore, additional variants may be introduced by the automaker, which could draw attention to a number of the recently registered names. After all, aficionados are keeping track of the days before the official launch of the Thar 5-door, which is expected to be a historic moment for the Indian car market.
