There have been several claims that the 5-door Mahindra Thar would be introduced on August 15. Now, in a recent development, Mahindra Automotive has posted a statement on its official social media handles, confirming that the Thar 5-door won't be making its worldwide premiere in South Africa on the said date, where the Indian carmaker plans on hosting an event. During the quarter results media interaction, the company revealed that the 5-door Thar is slated to arrive in our home market next year. Although the specifics of the upcoming Mahindra event taking place on August 15 are undisclosed, we anticipate seeing closer-to-production models of several of their future electric SUVs there. Further, the automaker intends to begin selling its new range of electric vehicles in 2025, beginning with the XUV e8, which is the XUV700's electric variant.

As far as the Thar 5-door is concerned, it will be the more practical version of the 3-door SUV due to its greater length and additional pair of doors. Although the SUV will have more amenities, such as a sunroof, it will still have the same dashboard design. The off-roader will have a reworked rear suspension and be built on a platform similar to that of the Scorpio N.

Mahindra Thar 5-Door: Engine and Transmission

The Thar 5-door model will be powered by the more potent 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines. Because there is no tax benefit, Mahindra could opt against employing the 1.5-litre engine. The maximum power output of the 2.0-litre gasoline engine is 150bhp, while the maximum power output of the 2.2-litre diesel engine is 130bhp. Moreover, Mahindra will keep providing the same choices for manual and torque converter automatic transmissions. The 5-door Thar will keep the 4WD capabilities much like the three-door version of the off-roader, benefiting from its go-anywhere ability with the added bonus of extra space.

Although the test models for the 5-door Thar that have been sighted thus yet resemble the 3-door model, there are some minor visual differences. The two have a similar basic structure, although they differ from one another in a few minor respects. A new grille pattern is added to the front profile. Even though the test vehicles' headlights are round and the final model has a similar form, Mahindra fitted square headlights to give it a more vintage look. On top of that, the longer side profile is a result of the wider wheelbase required to accommodate the additional doors.

The Thar is 3,985mm long, 1,820mm wide, and 1,855mm tall and is built on a ladder frame chassis. The wheelbase is 2,450mm long, and the ground clearance is 226mm. The Thar has three angles: 41.2 degrees for approach, 36 degrees for departure, and 26.2 degrees for ramp-over. The SUV will either have 16-inch or 18-inch wheels, depending on the model.
