Mahindra will take the wraps off its Thar 5-door SUV, which has been undergoing testing for nearly two years now, on August 15. Last time around, Mahindra unveiled the Thar EV concept at its annual Independence Day conference in South Africa, after revealing five born-electric SUVs in the UK in 2022. This time as well, the trend of unveiling a new product on the country's Independence Day will continue, with Mahindra all set to introduce the 5-door iteration of the Thar on the 15th of August, 2024. The upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-door could use the 'Thar Armada' moniker upon arrival. Its prices will be revealed a few weeks after its unveiling. Now, let's take a look at what the Mahindra Thar 5-door would look like.
Going by the previous spy shots, the Mahindra Thar 5-door will come with a reworked bodywork, circular LED headlights with new daytime running lights, a new pair of alloy wheels, and refreshed LED tail lamps. Though the 5-door version will retain the boxy silhouette of its 3-door sibling, it will have a longer wheelbase and two additional rear doors. Besides, the 5-door SUV will have its rear door handles integrated into the C-pillar. Mahindra is also expected to offer the Thar 5-door with a fixed metal top, just like the Thar 3-door.
Mahindra Thar 5-Door: Interior
The spy shots that surfaced on December 21, 2023, give us a glimpse into the interior of the Mahindra Thar 5-Door. According to the shots, the Thar 5-door will get some additional features compared to the Thar 3-door. Its biggest update will be a larger infotainment screen with better graphics, allowing for a redesigned dashboard, which is likely to feature an all-black colour scheme. Other expected bits include a single-pane sunroof, a redesigned centre console, leatherette seat upholstery, second-row AC vents, a split centre armrest for the front row, keyless entry, wireless phone charging, and type-C USB charging ports. Some of the features that will be carried over include a six-speaker sound system, steering-mounted controls, and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay connectivity.
Mahindra Thar 5-Door: Powertrain
Under the hood, the Mahindra Thar 5-Door will likely get the same engine options as the Thar 3-door – a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel engine. The latter develops 130bhp of maximum power and 300Nm of peak torque, while the former churns out 150bhp of peak power and 320Nm of torque. The vehicle could be offered with 6-speed manual and automatic transmission options.
Mahindra Thar 5-Door: Price, Rivals
The Thar 5-Door is expected to fall between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom). In the Indian market, it will rival the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and the upcoming Force Gurkha 5-door.
