The launch timeline for Mahindra's eagerly-awaited five-door Thar SUV has been revealed. The automaker stated during a meeting that the larger Thar will be making its way to the Indian shores by the middle of this year. Furthermore, it is expected to go on sale alongside the current generation three-door Thar SUV in the second quarter of 2024, according to Mahindra & Mahindra Executive Director and CEO Rajesh Jejurikar. The new Thar "will launch sometime in the middle of this calendar year!" he announced during the meeting. When it launches, the model will compete in the lifestyle SUV market against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny.
For the uninitiated, the Indian manufacturer has been testing the five-door version in the months leading up to its release and the test mules have already provided vital information about the same. The upcoming SUV may be dubbed the "Thar Armada" when it launches. It will be constructed on a different production line than the Thar 3-door, which is already subject to a protracted waiting list.
Mahindra Thar 5-door: Exterior Design
The current three-door Thar model will be positioned beneath the Mahindra five-door SUV. It will include a brand-new set of projector-based circular LED headlights. Additionally, a new set of larger 19-inch alloy wheels will be available, and the grille should see some minor revisions. There will still be a side-hinged tailgate at the back that is mounted with the spare wheel. The LED tail lamps do, however, use new components. The auto major has placed the rear door handles in an interesting vertical position, close to the C-pillar. Other design elements include halogen fog lamps, revamped front and rear bumpers, and a single-pane windshield. Besides, it is expected to sport a sunroof and a fixed metal top as well.
Mahindra Thar 5-door: Under the Hood
Technical specifications for the five-door Thar are expected to stay as earlier, meaning that the three-door model's 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engine options will be retained. The same units are also offered with the XUV700 and the Scorpio-N. The diesel model can develop 130bhp of maximum power and 300Nm of peak torque, while the petrol mill can churn out 150bhp of peak power and 320Nm of torque. A six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission will probably be mated to both mills.
Mahindra Thar 5-door: Cabin Layout and Features
The new Thar will likely boast a dual-tone brown and black interior theme, which most likely extends to the upholstery, in contrast to the current 3-door model's all-black dashboard. This update allows for a colour change of the cabin and emulates the more family-friendly features of the 5-door model. A metallic logo beneath the left air vent and grab hold on the passenger side were all familiar details that contributed to the car's well-known interior design aesthetic.
Features-wise, the model will come with a larger 10.25-inch infotainment screen with wireless smartphone connectivity, a digital instrument cluster, cruise control, a 360-degree camera, a single-pane sunroof, wireless charger, and dual-zone climate control, according to the most recent batch of spy photos. Roof-mounted speakers, an electric fuel lid opener, front parking sensors, a rear centre armrest, and rear AC vents are some of the other noteworthy amenities.
Regarding safety features, the vehicle is expected to have a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), six airbags, an electronic stability control (ESC), and a reversing camera.
Mahindra Thar 5-door: Expected Price
In terms of cost, it is anticipated that the ex-showroom pricing range for the Mahindra Thar 5-door will fall between Rs 12.50 lakh and Rs 18.50 lakh. In the domestic market, the SUV will compete against the forthcoming Force Gurkha 5-door and the Maruti Suzuki Jimny.
