Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), one of the leading homegrown automakers, recently revealed that its much-anticipated Thar 5-door will be launched in India in 2024. Several industry reports previously indicated that the popular Thar's 5-door version might go on sale in our country this year. But, Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer (Auto and Farm Sector) of Mahindra has, thankfully, put an end to the rumours surrounding the forthcoming model by announcing that the Thar 5-door will not see a launch in the calendar year 2023 (CY23). He further went on to confirm that the model will rather go on sale in CY24. Jejurikar gave this update while responding to media inquiries at Mahindra's Q4 and FY23 financial results release. The Maruti Suzuki Jimny, which goes on sale in the first week of June, will be the new Thar's main competition in the Indian market. For the uninitiated, the carmaker debuted the RWD version of the well-known off-road vehicle earlier this year, despite the Thar initially coming standard with 4WD.

Mahindra Thar 5-door: Exterior
Although the test mules of the 5-door version spotted so far are identical to the 3-door Thar, we anticipate minor stylistic alterations. The primary structure will certainly be the same, but we can expect a few external tweaks to set the two apart. A new grille pattern might be added to the front profile. While the test vehicles' headlights are round, and the final model will probably have a similar form, Mahindra could distinguish their model with square headlights to give it a more vintage appearance. Moreover, because of the expanded wheelbase to accommodate the additional doors, the side profile will be longer. For the larger version of Thar, we can anticipate a fresh set of alloy wheels. As there isn't much that can be changed outside the tail light design, the rear might remain the same.
Mahindra Thar 5-door: Powertrain
In terms of the powertrain, the Mahindra Thar 5-door SUV will be powered by the same engines that drive the existing 3-door variant. Three different engines are available for the Thar: a 1.5-litre D117 CRDe diesel (117 bhp/300 Nm), a 2.2-litre mHawk 130 CRDe diesel (130 bhp/300 Nm), and a 2.0-litre mStallion 150 TGDi petrol (150 bhp/320 Nm). A 6-speed MT may be paired with the 1.5-litre diesel engine. There are 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT options for the 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre gasoline engines. Both RWD and 4WD are now available for the off-roader.
Mahindra Thar: Dimensions
The Thar is 3,985mm long, 1,820mm wide, and 1,855mm tall based on the ladder frame chassis. The wheelbase is 2,450mm long, and the ground clearance is 226mm. The approach angle, departure angle, and ramp-over angle of the Thar are each 41.2 degrees, 36 degrees, and 26.2 degrees, respectively. The SUV comes with either 16-inch or 18-inch wheels, depending on the model.

Mahindra Thar 5-door: Interior Features and Expected Price
The dashboard of the upcoming Thar will be taken from the 3-door version and will be somewhat identical. Nevertheless, there will be minor changes to the features and trim colour options. Additionally, one of the sighted test mules indicated a large central armrest for the front passengers. A suitable bench with space for three people will now be added to the second row. The second row will also offer plenty of headroom and legroom. Besides this, there will be more boot space available. Cruise control, a rear parking camera, an 8-inch touchscreen system, up to six airbags, and automatic AC are a slew of other features you can expect to come with the Thar 5-door. Price-wise, one might anticipate that it would begin at about Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom).
