Mahindra & Mahindra commenced deliveries of the recently launched Thar 2WD on January 15, 2023. The model's price begins at Rs 9.99 Lakh and goes up to Rs 13.49 Lakh (all prices, ex-showroom). For the unversed, they are just introductory prices and apply to only the first 10,000 bookings. Mahindra was recently in the spotlight for high waiting periods of the Scorpio-N and the XUV700. Now, it has become the talk of the town again for the extended waiting period for the newly launched Thar. The Thar 2WD has crossed a mark of one year for the waiting period. The maximum waiting period for the Thar 2WD petrol version is three months, and the diesel model, on the other hand, has a long waiting period ranging between 16 to 18 months in some cities. Further, the petrol and diesel versions of the Thar 4x4 are said to have a waiting period extending up to three months.
Considering the high waiting period, the diesel variant appears to be quite popular among buyers. We believe that its reasonable price in the range has contributed to it. Also, its engine capacity of less than 1.5-litre helps in cost savings, which may have boosted its demand in India.

Mechanically speaking, the new Mahindra Thar comes equipped with a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which generates 117bhp and 300Nm, and the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, which produces 150bhp and 320Nm. For transmission, the diesel engine uses a 6-speed manual gearbox, and the turbo-petrol, on the other hand, utilizes a 6-speed automatic. There are two trim levels for the Thar 2WD - AX (O) and LX. While the petrol engine is only available with the top-spec LX model, the diesel engine is available with both trims.

In terms of market rivalry, the new Thar competes with the likes of the newly introduced Maruti Suzuki Jimny, alongside the Force Gurkha in India. In related news, Mahindra is also planning to roll out the 5-door Thar in sometime this year. The upcoming model will offer 4X4 and 4X2 powertrains. As of yet, we have no update about the price of the 5-door Thar but we expect it to demand a premium ranging between Rs 70,000 and Rs 80,000 over the current model.
