Mahindra launched the much-anticipated Thar 2WD in January 2023. Within a month of its launch in both diesel and petrol versions, the lifestyle SUV already had a waiting period of over a year. The maximum waiting period for the Thar 2WD petrol version was three months, while the diesel version had a long waiting period ranging between 16 to 18 months in certain markets. And now, the Thar 2WD diesel variant is back in the news again, thanks to its current waiting period, which has now been reduced to about a month.
The diesel variant of the Mahindra Thar 2WD is currently seeing a waiting period of 17 months, if we believe some market reports. Under the hood, it receives a 1.5-litre diesel engine generating 117bhp of maximum power and 300Nm of peak torque. On offer is only a 6-speed manual transmission. In contrast, the petrol-powered Mahindra Thar 2WD has a shorter waiting period of about a month. Powering the petrol variant is a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, which is carried over from the Thar 4WD. This mStallion engine churns out 150bhp and 320Nm, and transmission duties are taken care of by a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Mahindra Thar 2WD: Variants, Price
The Mahindra Thar 2WD is available in two trims - AX(O) and LX. The petrol engine is available only with the top-spec LX, while the diesel engine is offered across both trims. In terms of pricing, the Thar 2WD currently retails between Rs 10.54 lakh and Rs 13.49 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom).
Given the longest waiting period, the diesel variant seems to be quite popular among buyers, thanks to its reasonable price in the Thar line-up. Also, its engine capacity of less than 1.5 litres helps in cost savings, which may have boosted its demand in India.
