Maruti Suzuki, which has long been exporting Suzuki and Toyota branded vehicles built in India to several countries, has started shipping Fronx, an Indian-made vehicle, to Japan. The SUV headed for the Japanese market will have a 1.5-litre petrol engine, just like the Fronx sold in other export markets; the model offered in India does not have this engine. While the SUV only comes with the FWD option in other foreign markets, the units made for Japan will also offer Suzuki's AllGrip Select AWD technology along with other special amenities.

Bookings for the Fronx in Japan commenced earlier this month, and over 700 have already been made. The official launch date for the SUV is October 16, with deliveries scheduled to begin in the second half of October. According to Maruti Suzuki, the first shipment included 1,600 Fronx units built in India.

Japan-spec Suzuki Fronx: Powertrain Options

Similar to all other Fronx units exported overseas, those intended for Japan are also manufactured in Gujarat's SMG (Suzuki Motor Group) plant. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated (NA) petrol engine with mild hybrid technology powers the Fronx built for the Japanese market. The Fronx that is marketed in South Africa has the same configuration. There are two gearbox options: a five-speed manual and a torque converter automatic with paddle shifters.

The car lacks external "AllGrip" badging, and only the higher trim levels come with the AllGrip Select AWD technology. Suzuki's mid-range AWD technology, the AllGrip Select, is positioned beneath the AllGrip Pro and above the AllGrip Auto. The Grand Vitara sold in our nation features this setup. There are four "off-road" modes available for driver control: Auto, Sport, Snow, and Lock. The centre console's buttons are used to regulate the system electronically. In response to road conditions and driver input, the Sport and Snow modes adjust the throttle and deliver power to the rear wheels as necessary. The Fronx AWD's suspension system is also unique, with a modified rear torsion beam configuration to support the AWD system.

Japan-spec Suzuki Fronx: Interior and Features Updates

The Japan-spec Fronx receives extra features in addition to the engine and transmission, the most notable of which is the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), which includes automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance. Other features include front parking sensors, an electronic parking brake (EPB) with a hill hold, automatic cruise control, and heated seats. In addition to the equipment, the Japan-spec model gets a new interior theme with a chic colour palette of dark brown and plum, accentuated by a generous amount of soft-touch materials on the door pads and other surfaces. The dual-tone upholstery on the seats combines faux leather and fabric upholstery for a sophisticated and elegant effect. The piano black finish on the central console, steering wheel, and door handles further enhances the upscale vibe.
