The legendary Land Rover Defender will no longer be available next year onwards as the production ends in the U.K. in December 2015.
One of the most invincible automobiles ever – the Land Rover Defender – will no longer be available next year onwards as the production will end in December 2015. To mark the ending of the iconic product, Land Rover has decided to make the last few pieces available in three different special versions.
The news was revealed at Red Wharf Bay in Anglesey where the original Land Rover got its shape for the first time in 1947. The last piece will roll off the production line at Land Rover’s Solihull plant in the U.K. in December. The reasons for the current version to go off the shelf are safety and emissions, and we are not ruling not the possibility of a successor but it might take some good time before we get to hear some such news.
Delivering the news, Nick Rogers, Vehicle Line Director, Land Rover said, “Passion and enthusiasm surround everything we do with Defender, and that will never change. With a history stretching back 68 years, this is a Land Rover that has thrived for decades on its unquestionable capability and iconic shape. I now have the honour of being one of the many enthusiasts at Land Rover committed to creating a fitting successor to the legendary Defender.”
This news might make some of you fans drop a tear, but it is as true as it gets. In its final phase, the Defender will be made available in three editions – Autobiography, Heritage and Adventure.
On these variants, Mr. Rogers added, “We wanted to mark the end of Defender production at Solihull with a special edition but coming up with a single identity was impossible, so we developed three very different interpretations of the Defender to reflect its strength and breadth of character.”
The Adventure Edition will provide the same outdoor experience that the Defender is known for. The Goodyear MT/R off-road tyres and an underbelly protection will make sure that nothing comes your way when you are negotiating your way with the nature. This edition will be available from £38,400.
The Autobiography Edition will provide a little more luxury with its leather upholstery and some extra power than usual. The price of the Autobiography Edition will start from £61,500
The last variant – the Heritage Edition – looks like the typical old-age Land Rover models by mixing old design cues with modern comforts. The Heritage Edition will arrive with a price tag that starts from £30,900.
All the variants will be powered by the same 2.2-litre diesel engine that powers the existing Defenders.
