There's an old saying, 'records are meant to be broken', and the Lamborghini Huracan Performante did exactly that by creating a new production car lap record of 6:52.01 minutes on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany. The camouflaged Performante managed to get around 'the green hell' five seconds faster than the previous production car record holder, the Porsche 918 Spyder. Lamborghini have uploaded a video of this record breaking lap on its YouTube channel.
The man behind the wheel, who created history, is Lamborghini's test driver Marco Mapelli. He had also set the Aventador SV's sub seven-minute lap time at Nürburgring in 2015.
What makes this record lap even more sweeter is the fact that the Huracán Performante isn't a hybrid powered hyper car. It came down to Lamborghini's active aerodynamics system or Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva (ALA), lighter chassis, its four-wheel drive, a more powerful V10 and a lot more grippier Pirelli Trofeo R tyres. But the secret sauce isn't more power output, it's the ALA technology, which ensured that the Huracan Performante's cornering speed was very fast. The raging bull managed to achieve this with the help of the new active front spoiler and the rear wing, which increase downforce while negotiating turns and reduce drag to achieve top speed.
After breaking the record, Stefano Domenicali, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Lamborghini, said, "This was an incredible and emotional moment. Together with Maurizio Reggiani, Board Member for Research & Development, we agreed during the car’s development that with the technical and performance prowess of the Huracán Performante, not only was a sub seven-minute lap at the Nordschleife possible, but the lap record too." He added, "We wanted to achieve the Nürburgring victory in advance of the Performante’s launch."
Lamborghini will showcase the Huracan Performante at the Geneva Motor Show, which starts from March 7, 2017.
