The growing trend in engine performance is the development of an engine with better fuel economy without compromising on performance, and this trend exists in the luxury segment as well. So, after listening to their customer demands, Jaguar Land Rover has developed its own new family of advanced technology, low-friction, high-performance petrol and diesel engines to meet this growing demand.

The new engines specially developed by JLR are apart of the new Ingenium family of premium diesel and petrol engines and the British car maker promises that these new engines will deliver class-leading levels of torque, horsepower and refinement while reducing emissions and fuel consumption. JLR claims that these new engine will be configurable, flexible and modular.

The engine have been designed with special lightweight materials, and the engine blocks - each with a 500cc cylinder capacity - can be easily configured to allow smaller or larger engines to be quickly and efficiently developed to meet future regulatory and competitive requirements - or simply to allow for new technologies to be added on to them without complete reconstruction. The engine will also be suited for manual and automatic transmission, as well as electrified hybrid drive systems.

Some of the new technologies used in these new engines include, roller bearings on cam and balancer shafts, computer-controlled variable oil pumps and water pumps, a simplified cam drive system designed for modular application, crankshafts that are offset from the centre of the block, and electronically controlled piston cooling jets. All the engines will also feature more efficient turbo chargers.

“Being configurable and flexible are the two key strands of Ingenium’s DNA because we have future-proofed our new engines from the outset. Ingenium will be able to accept new advances in fuel, turbocharging, emissions, performance and electrification technologies when they are ready and accessible to be deployed," said Ron Lee, Jaguar Land Rover Director of Powertrain Engineering.
