MG Motor has revealed an all-electric SUV based on the ZS, and it's likely coming to India in 2020.
MG Motor has revealed an all-electric version of its ZS SUV – dubbed the eZS – for the Chinese market. And how’s this relevant for our market, you ask? Well, it’s very likely that the same car will be coming to India and that’s because MG Motor recently announced that its second launch in our market will be a ‘global electric SUV’ in 2020. So, keeping all that in mind, we think the eZS fits the bill perfectly.
The new all-electric offering by MG is based on mid-size ZS SUV, that’s around the same size as a Hyundai Creta. The eZS is propelled by a single electric motor that is rated at 148bhp and 350Nm. The electric SUV will be front-wheel drive and MG quotes a 0-50km/h in 3.1 seconds. That’s brisk by any standard. Also, MG claims the SUV will have a range of around 428km on a full charge, and that the battery pack can be charged up to 80 per cent in 30 minutes using a fast-charging network.
The good thing about the eZS is that it doesn’t look outlandish – in fact, it looks exactly like the regular ZS. On the inside, the cabin of the eZS has a modern arrangement with a large infotainment screen taking the centre stage along with a digital screen that has a conventional looking instrument cluster.
MG has already confirmed that the electric car coming to India will be assembled in the country as CKD for sales in the domestic market. That said, before the eZS, the company will be launching its first product in India in 2019. MG Motor will be starting operations in India with as many as 45 dealerships. The company will be producing cars at its Halol facility – which was previously owned by General Motors India.
