Hyundai could unveil its new micro-SUV soon that is likely to be launched in India by the end of this year. The Hyundai AX1 has been spotted in production guise and hints at a global debut in the coming months
Hyundai recently teased its upcoming micro SUV codenamed AX1. The new micro SUV has been spotted in a close-to-production form in the international market hinting that Hyundai is gearing up for its global debut soon.
Most of the car wears a camouflage wrap, however, a few design elements peek out of it giving us an idea of what to expect in terms of styling. The circular projector headlamps surrounded by LED DRLs are evident along with eye brow-like turn indicators. The tail lamp unit houses a unique triangular pattern arranged to appear as a light bar – which was also showcased in the teaser.
Very little of the side profile is visible through the camouflage wrap. the sides exhibit a blacked-out A-pillar and a tilted B-pillar follows the design. Squared wheel arches and roof rails give it a crossover-SUV-like stance. Interestingly, these design elements were also observed on the Skoda Yeti that was launched in India over half a decade ago. Pod-like headlamp assembly, squared wheel arches with body cladding and minimum overhangs, blacked-out A-pillar with a sloping B-pillar, and roof rails were key design features of the aforementioned European crossover.
Unlike the Skoda Yeti, the Hyundai AX1 will be positioned in the more affordable price bracket. The new micro-SUV is likely to be positioned above the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso and will rival the Maruti Suzuki Ignis instead. We suspect, the AX1 to be based on Hyundai’s second-gen AH2 platform that is the base for the current Santro, however, with necessary updates to suit the SUV/crossover body style.
The prices for the Hyundai AX1 could begin from Rs 4.75 lakh (ex-showroom) and the new micro SUV is likely to undercut the Maruti Suzuki Ignis marginally. Expect the new Korean micro SUV to make its debut by the end of this year.
