Honda Motor Company has filed for a patent for an 11-speed gearbox with three-clutches.
We are currently living in a time where car manufacturers are adding more and more number of gears into the transmissions of their cars to squeeze out as much mileage from their engines. Honda has now had a stab at the same as they have filed a patent for an 11-speed triple-clutch transmission. Yes, you read it right “TRIPPLE-CLUTCH”.
Why three clutches you ask? Well the layman would say probably because dual clutch gearboxes are too mainstream. But to be honest we don’t really know as yet exactly how the transmission works. As of now, all we know is that the patent filed by Honda reveals that the third clutch reduces the drop in the torque which happens during a gear shift on a dual clutch layout. This would result in a more fuel efficient form of travel and save those small amounts of fuel that would generally be wasted during the shifts. However, its still remains unconfirmed, what is the exact layout and the mechanism of the transmission as the patent is still pending.
There is no confirmation of what kind of car will get this transmission, it could be anything from the small city car like the Honda Jazz to refine it for more fuel saving or all the way up to the big Honda Pilot SUV for its extra weight and torque required to move a such big vehicle efficiently. The transmission could also be used in sporty applications in race cars as well. Yet, we don’t even know if Honda will even make the gear box at all! You will just have to wait and see just like the rest of us.
