Ford has released the 60th Anniversary Edition Package, a retro-themed special Mustang, to commemorate the model's 60th birthday. The unveiling took place on Wednesday at Charlotte Motor Speedway, 60 years after Ford debuted the first Mustang at the New York World's Fair. Although only available on the Mustang GT Premium model, this premium package is accessible on coupes and convertible guises. Only 1,965 units of this unique Mustang will be produced by Ford. The number reflects the Mustang's first model year. The carmaker referred to the original as a 1964 1/2 model, although state DMVs designated them as 1965s. The special edition is scheduled to go on sale globally later this year. Let's take a look at what's new.
Ford Mustang 60th Anniversary Edition Model: Highlights
The Anniversary package includes a few key elements that connect it to the original; it is purely decorative and hence not particularly elaborate. The most striking of those is a brand-new set of 20-inch dark grey alloy wheels that have a straightforward five-spoke pattern and are reminiscent of the 1964 original, complete with red centre caps. Additional vintage touches include a "GT" emblem on the boot and "5.0" badges on the front fenders.
Along with some contrasting silver highlights, the grille has a new retro mesh design with a smoked-out effect for the headlights. The wing mirror caps are also plated in silver to resemble the chrome on the original Mustang. With contrasting red or silver stripes at the base of the doors, the Mustang 60th Anniversary package is available in three paint jobs: White, Race Red, or Vapour Blue. The interior features a commemorative 60th-anniversary plaque on the dashboard and a choice of Space Gray, Carmine Red, and Black Onyx upholstery.
Ford Mustang 60th Anniversary Edition Model: Mechanical Components
The Ford Mustang 60th Anniversary package is only available in GT Premium trim. It comes equipped with a 5.0-litre Coyote V8 engine, mated to a six-speed manual or a ten-speed automatic transmission. Offered for both coupe and convertible forms, the power and torque figures of the unit stand at 480bhp and 560Nm.
Entering its seventh decade on the market, the Mustang has been the world's best-selling sports car for over a decade. Ford claims that over a million examples have been delivered in the last ten years. The brand also debuted the Mustang GTD, the pony car's most potent variant. Beginning this summer, fans will be able to place orders for the special package. Prices will be disclosed closer to the market launch.
Mustang Mach-E Name Trademarked in India
In other news, the American carmaker has filed a trademark for the moniker ''Mustang Mach-E" in India, implying that the brand may return to the country shortly. Expect Ford to introduce the Mustang Mach-E as a completely built-up unit (CBU) in compliance with an import regulation permitting the import of up to 2,500 units without the need for homologation. However, given that major EV manufacturers like Tesla are aiming to build EV operations in India, Ford might consider a CKD option for the Mach E.
