Mahindra bids goodbye to the current-gen Thar with the launch of a special edition. Called the Thar 700, this will be the last batch of 700 units of the off-roader, before the launch of the next-gen model in 2020.
With the all-new Thar in the works, Mahindra has decided to bid farewell to the current model. And they’ve done it by launching a special version of the off-roader. Billed as the Thar 700, the limited run model is priced at Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) – which is only around Rs 24,000 more than the regular version. The special edition version comes with a number of visual and functional updates, and as its name also suggests, only 700 units of the Thar 700 will be available for sale.
The Thar 700 will be available in a special Aquamarine Colour, while the popular Napoli Black shade will also be on offer. Visual highlights include a special badge on the vehicle with the signature of the company’s chairman, Mr Anand Mahindra. Additionally, it gets new design 5-spoke alloy wheels, decals on the side and bonnet, blacked out grille and silver finish on the front bumper. Inside, the Thar 700 gets leatherette upholstery with Thar logos embossed on the front seats. The cabin layout, as well as features and equipment, will be unchanged from the standard model, meaning it’ll be as crude and bare basic as before.
Mechanically, the Thar 700 is unchanged from the regular Thar CRDe. This means that it’s powered by a 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine that churns out 105bhp and 247Nm of torque. The engine comes mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. Four-wheel drive is standard. The Thar 700 comes with ABS as well.
While the Thar 700 marks the end of the current model, the next-generation Thar is expected to go on sale next year. The new Thar has already been spotted testing multiple times, and it’s going to be based on a new platform, which will be more rugged and it'll meet the updated safety norms. Not to mention, the new Thar is expected to be even more capable off-road.
