California-based EV firm Fisker Inc has selected Hyderabad as the headquarters for its initial operations in India. And by initial, they mean the establishment of a technical centre. But will they also launch their products here?
Fisker Inc. has officially established its India headquarters in Hyderabad, Telangana. 'Our expansion into India represents both a strategic market opportunity and a significant boost to our global engineering capabilities,' said Fisker Chairman and CEO Henrik Fisker. 'We have already started local hiring in India and expect our new team in Hyderabad to be fully operational and engaged on multiple product programs within weeks. Our talent pool in India will help us pave the way for the launch of Fisker Ocean and Fisker PEAR in India.'
Judging by the last bit of this statement, it hints at the possibility of Fisker products coming to India. However, we're still quite a while away from actually confirming this. That's because initially, Fisker Vigyan India Pvt Ltd (the company's operating entity in Telangana) will focus on software development & embedded electronics, virtual vehicle development support functions, data analytics, and machine learning. The team in Hyderabad will work alongside the Fisker engineering and product development facilities in California, USA.
At present, Fisker has a global team of over 450 employees. With new hiring underway in India, Europe and the home market US, the figure is expected to reach the 800 mark by the end of 2022. Out of these, up to 200 positions will be filled in India.
Coming to their products, Fisker will commence production of the Ocean SUV on 17th November 2022 at the carbon-neutral factory of their manufacturing partner, Magna Steyr, in Graz, Austria. Planned to go on sale in two trims, the Fisker Ocean Sport will offer an estimated driving range of 440kms. And, as the name suggests, the Fisker Ocean Extreme is expected to pack a projected driving range of up to 630kms (based on WLTP test results). Fisker claims that they already have 40,000 reservations for the Ocean globally. So, expect the production model to make waves in the EV space soon...
