The Trial Champion sets a new record by wheeling the around the entire 60.3km mountain course
A wheelie is probably the most common entry point for any motorcyclist into stunting. Even when you start holding it for a few metres, it gives you that rush of adrenaline. But when you talk about holding a wheelie around the 60.3km course that plays host to the most dangerous motorsport event in the world, is a different ball game altogether.
Dougie Lampkin, 12 times World Trials Champion rode himself into the record books, as he wheelied around the entire Isle of Man TT course. The English rider took 1 hour 35 minutes to achieve the feat but it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Trials champion. The lap was telecast and recorded by Red Bull. The most critical aspect that could easily ruin the record run for Dougie was the wind. In fact, 55mph winds was also the reason why run was postponed from Saturday. The atmosphere was tense at the infamous mountain course as Dougie fought gusts of 40mph on the judgement day. Dougie achieved the feat on a 300cc Vertigo Combat Ice Hell-based bike.
After he crossed the finish line on one wheel, Dougie said, “It feels fantastic. The last 15 seconds were really lovely. The rest of it was a challenge! I feel absolute massive relief.” Dougie and the Red Bull team had been planning for seven months before the actual record run. “I was just hanging on really. It wasn’t over until a couple of metres from the end but that last couple of metres was just amazing,” Dougie added.
With 12 world titles, Dougie Lampkin had already etched his name in the history books and now by riding the Isle of Man TT course on one wheel, he’s entered the record books as well. What next Mr Lampkin?
