Citroen is planning a new crossover model that’ll launch in early 2014 and the Cactus Concept is the dressed up preview of the production model. The muscular concept is based in the C4 hatch’s underpinnings, so production versions will use the same engines as the hatch - the 1.4-litre, 1.6-litre petrol or a 1.6-litre diesel.
The concept runs a version of PSA Peugeot Citroen’s hybrid compressed air drivetrain. There are no batteries in this car, as are always associated with an electric hybrid and the Cactus suffers to cabin space impingement from its hybrid heart, and still gets away with a 45% reduction in fuel consumption during urban driving.
On the exterior, the grey lumps located at the front, side, and rear are called ‘Airbumps’ but Citroen says that they’re an air-filled pocket of soft fibre designed to absorb low-speed impacts without scratching the bodywork.
Will it make to production, you ask? and the answer is simple. Though the lack of side and rear windows, the sofa-style might make you think that Citroen wants to amuse the crowd that will go to Frankfurt but maybe this is where the company is headed to in the near future.
