Chevrolet has announced plans to launch Trailblazer and Spin in India as part of its plans to ramp up its presence (and investment) in the South-East Asian country.
The Trailblazer is a full-size SUV that will take on the Ford Endeavour and the Toyota Fortuner when it hits the Indian market in October this year. The Spin, on the other hand is Chevrolet’s bet in the MPV segment. The newly launched Renault Lodgy and the Datsun Go+ will be its prime competitors when it is introduced here in 2017, along with the Maruti Ertiga.
The company also announced plans to invest 1 billion dollar in India which includes upgradation of its manufacturing facility in Talegaon. Once finished by 2025, the factory would be able to produce 220,000 units a year - up from 130,000 units at present. The idea is to increase its sales in India and turn it into a global export hub.
However, GM will cease production at its Halol facility by the second half of 2016 to concentrate on its Talegaon plan.
Speaking at the occasion in New Delhi, GM CEO Mary Barra said: “Chevrolet is committed to India for the long term. We are delivering our promise and doubling our investment in India. This will provide our Indian customers the great vehicles they want and the world class customer experience they deserve. It will also support government’s Make in India program.”
Yesterday, General Motors announced that it would be investing 5 billion USD in a new vehicle family to tap emerging markets including India. It will launch eight new models in world's second most populous country in the coming months.
