Sony has also revealed its second EV prototype at CES 2022, in the form of the Vision-S 02 SUV!
In January 2020, Sony had presented its debut EV Concept at the Consumer & Electronics Show (CES), in the form of the Vision-S 01 fastback. However, back then, Sony had made no formal announcement regarding its intentions of venturing into the electric mobility space as a full-time EV manufacturer.
However, at the ongoing CES 2022, the Tokyo-based giant has revealed yet another EV prototype, the Vision-S 02 SUV, and also confirmed the formation of a new operating company dubbed Sony Mobility Inc., 'through which the company intends to explore entry into the EV market.' The latter announcement is of great significance as it finally gives us a glimmer of hope to see these Concept vehicles turn into road-ready vehicles. Expect Sony Mobility to be formally established in the Spring of 2022.
As of now, Sony has not provided in-depth details about the Vision-S 02 prototype's development. However, as both prototypes share the same EV/cloud platform, it's safe to say that the names that contributed to the development of the 01 Concept (Magna Steyr, Bosch, ZF, Qualcomm, Nvidia, etc.) continue to play the same roles for the 02.
Like the 01, the Vision-S 02 also features the same arsenal of high-tech goodies that consists of Sony's '360 Reality Audio' set up, an array of high-sensitivity, high-resolution CMOS image sensors, LiDAR sensors and Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors, as well as a 'BRAVIA CORE for VISION-S' fully integrated digital video service that enables shared or individual video playback on the front panoramic screen and individual rear-seat displays.
To keep our interest alive at this stage, Sony has also published the technical specs of the Vision-S 02 Concept to give us a fair idea of its capabilities, and possibly, the specs of a potential production-ready version.
