The new piece of news from the Centre says that cars older than 15 years are not going anywhere if they pass the fitness test.
Smashing the fears of many of the car owners in Delhi, the centre has decided the cars older than 15 years are going to stay and drive on the roads provided they pass the fitness tests. But the new rule might get implemented on commercial and transport vehicles.
“At present, the ministry does not propose to mandate age limit of private vehicles because this is a short-cut approach,” the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways informed the Supreme Court.
It also means that the government will make the fitness tests more stringent and mandatory. The tests will help the ministry figure out if the vehicle has reached the end of its life or not. The ministry also proposed that once the vehicle is bought, its fitness testing period should be reduced from 15 years to 5 years. After a vehicle crosses 15 year mark, it should be made mandatory to clear the fitness test every 2-3 years.
Implementing this thing will need some serious amendments in the Motor Vehicle Act and additions of more and more authorised test stations that work in a regulated framework.
In order to improve the quality of air, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas informed the Supreme Court that it would be able to supply a cleaner BS-IV compliant motor fuel to the entire country by April 1, 2017. North India should be able to enjoy this better fuel by April 1 this year whereas rest of the nation will be able to enjoy this fuel by April 1, 2017 which will be done in phases.
