The BYD Seal EV has stirred considerable interest in the premium Indian electric market due to its competitive pricing. At a base price of Rs 41 lakh, BYD's new electric vehicle undercuts several of its competitors, including the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6, which have starting prices of Rs 46.05 and Rs 60.95 lakh, respectively. In this article, we will compare the electric sedan from the Chinese automaker to one of its closest rivals – the Hyundai Ioniq 5 – and see how these EVs fare against each other on paper.

BYD Seal vs Hyundai Ioniq 5: Powertrain

The Seal in India is offered with two battery packs – 61.44kWh and 82.56kWh. The former powers the car's base Dynamic variant, offering 510 kilometres of range and power and torque figures of 201bhp and 310Nm. The latter, on the other hand, powers the Premium (mid-level variant), offering 308bhp and 360Nm of peak torque and a range of 650 kilometres. In both cases, power is sent to the rear wheels.

The Performance variant of the Seal features two electric motors – one for the front and one for the rear – making it the only all-wheel-drive variant. Interestingly, this variant is also powered by the 82.56kWh battery pack, just like the mid-spec variant. In the Performance variant, however, this battery helps generate 523bhp and 670Nm, offering a claimed range of 580 kilometres.

Hyundai's electric sedan, on the other hand, features a single rear-wheel-drive electric motor and a 72.6 kWh battery. The vehicle's power and torque figures are 216bhp and 350Nm, respectively, and it offers a claimed range of 631 kilometres.

While the BYD model offers a variety of powertrain options, including AWD capabilities, the Ioniq 5 has only one drivetrain and no AWD on offer. In terms of powertrain, then, the Seal EV seems to have an edge over the Ioniq 5.

The BYD Seal's notable design characteristics include a sloped roofline, electronic hidden flush door handles, diamond-cut 19-inch dual-tone alloy rims, and a rear LED bar, which runs the entire length of the bonnet. The Ioniq 5 EV, on the other hand,  is based on Hyundai's Parametric Dynamics design philosophy. It has 20-inch wheels, flush-fit door handles, LED headlights with squared DRLs, and a clamshell bonnet. The Seal electric sedan is 4,800mm long, 1,875mm wide, and 1,460mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2920mm. The Ioniq 5, on the other hand, has a 3,000mm wheelbase and is 4,635mm in length, 1,890mm in width, and 1,625mm in height.
