Land Rover has unveiled the bullet-proof Range Rover Sentinel ahead of its global debut in London later this month.
Based on the standard wheelbase variant of the the Range Rover Autobiography, the Sentinel is capable of withstanding penetration by 7.62mm high velocity, armour piercing incendiary bullets. It provides protection against up to 15kg Trinitrotoluene (TNT) blasts and defence against DM51 grenade explosions.
This has been made possible by a specially designed six-piece armoured passenger cell, with multi-laminated glass adding to the strength of the vehicle.
It will continue to run, even if the tyres are deflated, thanks to run-flat inserts. Further, if the main doors get blocked, the occupants can leave the vehicle via the Emergency Escape System behind the rear seats.
Speaking about the Sentinel, John Edwards, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations, said: “The Range Rover Sentinel is one of the most extraordinary Range Rovers ever produced. It has been expertly engineered by Special Vehicle Operations to provide class leading levels of protection to occupants against extreme attack, whilst retaining the Range Rover’s luxury and refinement with off road capability."
The Range Rover Sentinel houses a 340 PS, 3.0-litre V6 supercharged engine under the hood, with the power transmitted using a specially-calibrated 8-speed automatic gearbox.
The VR8 certified vehicle will make its global debut at the Defence and Security Equipment International Exhibition in London. It will be available for a guide price of ‘under €400,000 (Rs 2.9 crore).’
