BMW reveals VDX at Auto Shanghai 2025 with 18,000Nm torque, 1.2t downforce and glowing paint for a futuristic experience.
The BMW Vision Driving Experience (VDX) wowed visitors at the Auto Shanghai 2025 car show. While it's not for sale, this concept car offers a preview of future BMW electric vehicles. With a sleek, modern design inspired by the Neue Klasse, it features bold wheel arches, a sharp 'shark nose' front, and a glowing paint job that shifts from light yellow to neon yellow. Most impressive is its performance — BMW says that the VDX could produce up to 18,000 Nm of torque, showing the potential for race car-like power in a road car.
Even though the BMW VDX won’t go on sale, it plays an important role. It helps BMW test new ideas for future electric vehicles. The concept shows that BMW wants its future EVs to be powerful, fun to drive, and stylish. The VDX gives us a clear look at the next step in BMW’s electric car journey.

Jochen Goller, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Customers, Brands and Sales, said: 'This evening in Shanghai, BMW Group presented the most powerful prototype BMW has ever built. With up to 18,000 Nm of torque, the BMW Vision Driving Experience demonstrated Joy of Driving in its ultimate form. Equipped with our new super brain “Heart of Joy”, the VDX is converting the ultimate electric power into controlled driving pleasure - no wonder we’ve experienced overwhelming feedback from the audience.'
BMW says that the VDX is packed with advanced technology designed to test and develop next-generation systems. With active aerodynamics capable of generating 1.2 tonnes of downforce and handling up to 3g of lateral force, the VDX reaches performance levels typically seen in Formula 1 cars.
The standout feature of the VDX is its centrally mounted Heart of Joy control computer, which manages all dynamic driving functions in real time. Working with BMW’s Dynamic Performance Control software, the system delivers precise handling and immediate responsiveness, continuing BMW’s tradition of engineering cars that are engaging and responsive to drive.
