As suggested by the name, the special edition marks the 35th anniversary of the M5 model family; just 350 units will be available across the world from July 2019.
The BMW M5 has been a globally-adored name in the high-performance sports sedan arena for 35 years now. It all started in 1984 when BMW took the inline-six motor from its mid-engined sports car, the BMW M1, and plonked it into an E28 5-Series. Result? The fastest production sedan in the world was sitting in BMW's Munich facility, waiting for its debut at the 1985 Amsterdam Motor Show.
The F90 M5, which made its global debut in 2017 and is the current generation of the model, produces a manic 591bhp and an earth-moving 750Nm of torque from its twin-turbo V8. If this wasn't enough, BMW went on to announce a 'Competition' version of the F90 M5 in May 2018, which takes home the title for housing the most powerful twin-turbo V8 engine in the model's history - producing a colossal 617bhp and the same 750Nm of torque. The M5 Edition 35 Years also houses the same V8 and shares its underpinnings with the M5 Competition. In contrast, the E28 M5 produced 282bhp.
To make the anniversary edition a bespoke version, the Bavarians have embellished the car with numerous BMW Individual fittings and custom design elements catered specifically for the Edition model. Most discernable changes on the exterior include a Frozen Dark Grey Metallic paint finish which features a special pigmentation to create a silk-matte surface impression and newly-designed 20-inch M-alloy wheels which have been finished in an exclusive Graphite Grey colour. The M carbon-ceramic brakes can be ordered with a gold-finish as an option.
Inside, the Edition model features a unique gold-anodised aluminium-carbon trim finisher which adorns the instrument panel, door trim sections and the centre console. The M multifunction seats have been finished in the BMW Individual black Merino leather trim with gold contrast stitching. Customers will be reminded of the car's special edition tag every time they get into it as the door sill plates bear 'M5 Edition 35 Jahre' inscription. This inscription, combined with the production unit number, will be laser-etched on cupholder cover as well.
BMW will produce just 350 units of the M5 Edition 35 Years and they'll be available for order from July 2019.
