It’s just been a few weeks since Mercedes-Benz came out with its luxury hatchback – the A-Class. Yesterday it was Volvo’s turn with the V40 Cross Country and now BMW has jumped onto this bandwagon.

The German carmaker, BMW, has started promotions of its upcoming 1-series on its India website. From what we can gather; BMW will be giving you a chance to drive the BMW 1-series side by side, against Sachin Tendulkar.

When launched, the BMW 1-series will be the smallest and most affordable BMW in the market. The car would be locally produced at the BMW plant in Chennai, and will compete with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. So expect prices to be super competitive and in the 20-25 lakhs quadrant.

The BMW 1-series is based on the same platform as the 3-series and it shares some major components with the saloon. Internationally, BMW sells the 1-series with the 1.6-litre petrol and the 2.0-litre diesel engine options. But we think that BMW might just give it the current engines doing duty on the X1.

Hence, we think that the 1-series will be the recipient of the 2.0-litre, 181bhp churning diesel and the 2.0-litre 150bhp producing petrol engines. With promotions already on, expect the launch of this luxury hatchback in India in the next few months. As always, we’ll keep you posted about the developments.
