BMW’s 1.5 litre hybrid engine - that powers the i8 - took top honours in the International Engine of the Year Awards 2015, beating the likes of Ford’s 999cc engine and PSA Peugeot Citroen’s 1.3 three cylinder turbo engine, among others
With this award, BMW ended Ford’s three year reign at the top, beating American car maker’s engine by 274 points to 267. Ford, however, didn’t leave empty handed, with its aforementioned engine winning the sub-1 litre displacement category.
Among other noteworthy winners, Mercedes’ 2 litre turbo engine that produces 360 PS of power, won the 1.8L-2L category by a mammoth margin of 76 points, leaving its German rivals Audi and BMW trailing behind in second and third places respectively. Those two brands, however, emerged victories in 2.0-2.5 Litre (Audi) and 2.0-2.5L Litre (BMW) categories respectively.
McLaren may be struggling in F1 due to an underpowered Honda engine, their own roadcar power unit got plenty of praise from the 65 strong panel. The 3.8L V8 twin-turbo that makes appearance in 675LT, 650S, 625C and the 12C was elected as the winner in 3 4 Litre category.
Ferrari’s 4.5L V8 that churns out 570 PS of power in 458 Italia and 605 PS in 458 Speciale was awarded with the tag of the best engine in the above 4 Litre category.
