We’re a bunch of crazy chaps when it comes to anything on wheels that’s small, yet powerful. And if it’s got rear-wheel drive, the fun quotient only gets that much higher! At a recent media event, BMW India’s President, Phillip von Sahr, said that the 1 Series is ready for its Indian debut, and we expect it to be seen on our roads by mid-2013. The 1 Series hatch will be assembled at BMW India’s Chennai facility, which should keep costs in check. The plant has a capacity of 11,000 units currently, but with the 1 Series rolling off the assembly line, BMW is said to be considering further expansion.
The 1 Series will likely offer two engine options – a 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol engine, which will generate a power figure of 136bhp and 220Nm of torque, and the familiar 2.0 litre common-rail diesel engine (a revamped version of the N47 series), which will produce 143bhp and 300Nm of turning force.
The 1 Series, which is based on the 3 Series platform, is by far the smallest BMW out there. It’s a premium hatchback, the likes of which India has never seen before. However, we will likely see the Mercedes A Class do battle with the BMW 1 Series on our shores in the not too distant future. And this says a lot about how much the Indian market has developed over the years. The 1 Series will, of course, further lower the threshold for entry into the BMW brand.
But it’ll also have another type of buyer – the enthusiast who wants an involving, rear-drive machine. So, BMW, please give us the option of a Sport version as well. And, while you’re at it, please provide the option of a manual transmission as well if it’s not too much trouble – now that would make it a proper drivers’ car.
