Bertone has revived its iconic 1969 Runabout concept as a bona fide supercar, combining classic design with contemporary performance standards. For the uninitiated, the 1969 Autobianchi A112 Runabout concept influenced the Fiat X1/9 and Lancia Stratos. The new Runabout features a powerful 493bhp V6 engine, delivering impressive speed and handling. This updated version retains the distinctive look of the original while incorporating the latest automotive technology. Planned for limited production, this model introduces a unique lineup of Bertone vehicles targeting enthusiasts who desire a combination of eye-catching design and powerful performance. The latest iteration of the Runabout aims to capture the spirit of the past while appealing to today’s luxury sports car market.

Bertone has been tight-lipped about the chassis details but has suggested a focus on lightweight design and confirmed a mid-mounted, non-electrified V6 mill. This powertrain boasts an impressive 493bhp, significantly improving over the original concept’s modest 1.1-litre, four-cylinder, which only generated 53bhp.

Remaining faithful to the original design, the refreshed Runabout features its signature wedge shape, marked by an L-shaped line that flows from the roll bar and a horizontal split along the body. The front end boasts prominent fenders rising from a flat, vented hood, while pop-up headlights provide a nostalgic touch and maintain its street-legal credentials. The rear end showcases round LED taillights, a sculpted diffuser, and four strategically positioned exhaust pipes. Customers can order the revamped Runabout in two configurations: the Barchetta, which provides an open-air driving experience with neither a roof nor a windshield, or the Targa, which comes with a removable roof.

Andrea Mocellin, Lead designer, said, 'The challenge was maintaining the spirit and purity of the original 1969 model while integrating modern high-performance technology. The new Bertone Runabout is a perfect blend of design heritage and modern performance, created for those who celebrate the good life and the pleasure of driving.'

Inside, the two-seater cabin follows a minimalist philosophy, featuring a striking red and black colour scheme accented by sleek aluminum elements, an appealing homage to performance-focused design without overwhelming high-tech features.
