After having record sales in 2014, the British carmaker is now eyeing the luxury SUV segment and having said so, the Bentley SUV will be the most expensive SUV ever.
Owned by Volkswagen Motors, Bentley sold a record number of cars in 2014. Kicked by this achievement, the British luxury carmaker has decided to tap the luxury SUV segment for which the potential customers have already started queuing. Bentley expects to sell over 3,000 units of this SUV once the sales begin somewhere in 2016. This move is also significant for Bentley as it plans to sell over 20,000 cars worldwide by 2020.
Commenting on the new plans, Wolfgang Duerheimer, head of the Crewe, England-based unit of Volkswagen told journalists in London, “The Bentley SUV will be the most exclusive, most luxurious and most expensive SUV in the world. The level of luxury will be extraordinary."
USA contributed most to Bentley sales in 2014 accounting for almost 30%. China was close second where the sales rose by 22% to 2,670 units. Bentley has almost 35% of market share in China in the ultraluxury car segment.
The SUV will not be the most expensive Bentley car available, but the cost of optional additions will push the cost go over other carmakers’ models. The new SUV will compete against the finest and most expensive SUVs of the world like Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, the Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG and the top-of-the-line Range Rover series.
THE SUV is expected to cost over €1,80,000 (Rs. 1.35 crores) and will make Bentley’s presence visible in segments other than sedans and coupes.
