Somewhere down the line, Volkswagen lost the plot on the iconic Beetle. From being a cute hatchback, it was transformed into a sporty looking one which didn't find too many takers. This time around VW unveiled four Beetle concepts to satisfy both lifestyle and sporty drivers and New York Auto Show is the ideal place to unveil these special concepts because according to VW's American chief Michael Horn, the Beetle sells more in the US than the whole of Europe combined.
The Beetle now makes a serious fashion statement with a retro denim cabriolet, the striking orange coloured the Wave convertible and the two coupes -- the Pink Edition and the sporty Beetle Concept R-Line .
The Jeans Bug was first introduced in the mid-1970s and made successful comebacks in in the 1980s and 1990s. The new Cabriolet Denim concept gets a ‘Stonewashed Blue Metallic’ body colour with soft top in dark blue with a special fabric texture. The exterior mirror caps, side skirts and body moldings are finished in gray and sports 18-inch disc aluminum-alloy wheels. Coming to interiors the Color & Trim department restyled features like sport seats in blue; the inner seating surfaces are upholstered in a light blue fabric, while the outer surfaces are designed in dark blue V-tex leatherette.
The Wave concept is bathed in ‘Habanero Orange Metallic’, which reflects the American spirit on the East and West coast beaches. The convertible's interiors get fabric patterns from the 1950s and 60s influence and there is a genuine wood dashpad designed in traditional surfboard style. It comes with 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and chromed door mirrors.
For those who love being the talk of town, then the Beetle Pink Edition is made just for you. Pink accessories can be found among the most expensive labels in Manhattan and other great cities of the world. The dashpad is finished in high-gloss Titanium Black while customised Pink Metallic is on the door shoulder panels, air vent surrounds, steering wheel spoke trim, and the stitching around the steering wheel and shift lever and the borders of the floormats.
The Beetle R-Line concept comes in Oryx White Pearl colour and has aggressive bumpers that have large air vents at the front and wrap-around high-gloss black moldings that extend down the sides of the car. Other visual changes include a rear diffuser, painted black exterior mirror caps, a large rear spoiler and 20-inch Monterey aluminum-alloy wheels. The Beetle R-Line concept is 0.6 inches wider than the standard production car. It is powered by a 2.0-litre TSI engine that produces 220 PS of power and compliments the car’s sporty exterior look.
