It been fours years since Bajaj Auto first showcased their small car- RE60 - at the Delhi Auto Expo in 2008. In the words of Mr. Rajiv Bajaj, MD Bajaj Auto, the RE60 "is not a car. It’s a four wheeler,” and though the launch is still a few months away, the company says that this small four-wheeler will gradually replace the autorickshaw.
To be built at Bajaj Auto's Aurangabad plant, the RE60 will have a 200cc, water-cooled, fuel-injected DTSi engine that boasts of a top speed of 70km/h. With power going up to 19bhp, Bajaj also claims that the RE60 will deliver a mileage in addition of 35km/l.The engine is mounted at the rear and hence eats up the boot space bringing down the usable space to 44 litres.
The base model comes with an integrated digital fare meter in the dashboard. At the centre is the instrument cluster and the gear lever just below it. The RE60 is designed to seat four passengers including the driver so technicaly it still seats just as much as the rickshaw but now its more comfortable. While the RE60 is designed to be a commercial passenger vehicle Rajiv Bajaj does not rule out the possibility of the vehicle entering various peripheral segments. The price has not yet been announced and we will get to know of it soon.
