Auto Expo 2023: This year's edition of the mega auto event saw a number of debuts from Kia India, including the unveiling of the EV9 electric SUV concept and the updated Carnival (KA4). The EV9 will serve as the brand's global flagship electric vehicle and was first showcased at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show. The EV9 is based on the same platform as the previously launched Kia EV6 in India and is set to go into production soon.

The most distinguishing aspect of the Kia EV9 is its squared-off design and huge dimensions, measuring 4,929mm in length, 2,055mm in width, and 1,790mm in height. The front end features a tiger-nose grille, a blanked-out panel with LED modules, a Z-shapes headlight cluster, and turn indicators, integrated into the same module. The SUV has a high stance and a large glass area. The vertical LED taillights run almost the entire length of the back pillar. It's important to note that some design elements such as the counter-hinged doors, LED headlamps and others may not be used in the production model as it is still a concept.
The Kia EV9 was exhibited with a 77.4kWh battery pack. The motor specifications are yet to be disclosed by the carmaker. However, given the versatility of the E-GMP platform, the vehicle will use dual-motor and single-motor setups with AWD and RWD variants. The E-GMP platform also includes an 800V electrical structure, which allows for quick charging at rates of up to 350kW. Using a fast charger, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in about 20 minutes. The Kia EV9 concept's production version will be available in a dual-motor version, a four-wheel-drive range-topper variant, and an entry-level version with a single motor driving the rear axle.

The Kia EV9 concept's interior has a relatively understated dashboard with a twin-screen infotainment setup and a flat-bottom steering wheel without spokes. There are no physical controls at all. The interior gets a three-row configuration – the second row of seats can be folded fully flat and the first row of seats can rotate to create a lounge-like space. It's further embellished by trendy ambient lighting all around. These features, however, will most likely be toned down in the production model. It will include autonomous driving features, over-the-air software update compatibility, and feature-on-demand (FOD), allowing owners to opt for only those functions that they require.
