Audi teases the forthcoming Q2 - the new entry-level SUV from the company.
At the beginning of 2016, Audi had confirmed that a new compact-SUV, called the Q2, is under development and will enter the market this year. The company has now announced the Q2 will make its debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March.
There hasn’t been any official statement from Audi on the Q2 as yet, but it wants you to know that a smaller (or the smallest) Q-range vehicle is on its way, and that its spot on the market is “reserved” . As can be seen in the teaser image, all the Q-range vehicles from the company – starting from the Q7, then Q5, and Q3 are parked in a driveway, waiting for the newcomer to arrive at the blank space alongside.
Audi suggests that the new Q2 will create a niche for itself. It will be aimed at younger customers, so expect its design to reflect the same intent. Underpinning the Q2 will be Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform – the A3, VW Golf etc., are based around the same platform. While it may share the basic architecture with the A3, don’t expect it to have a similar footprint as of the sedan. It’s also worth noticing that the A3 is longer than the Q3 (4,456mm vs 4,388mm). How compact will the Q2 be then - given the fact that it sits below the Q3 in the range?
Powertrain options on the Q2 will include 3- and 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines ranging between 1.4-litre and 2.0-litre of cubic capacity. Expect the base models to come with front-wheel drive as standard while quattro all-wheel drive will be optional on more powerful variants.
Upon its launch in global markets, the Audi Q2 will become the most affordable crossover from the manufacturer. Considering India’s affinity for SUVs with four-rings, odds of Audi bringing the new entry-level crossover here are quite high.
