The Porsche Cayenne Coupe finds the recently introduced Audi flagship, the Q8, in its crosshairs. Both cars are powered by a 3.0-litre V6 turbo petrol unit and have a lot more in common as well. Here’s a look at how the two compare with each other on paper.
A little over a decade ago, BMW was the only luxury carmaker that offered Coupe-SUVs. With the kind of success that the German carmaker tasted, rival brands soon followed suit. While the segment has been gradually growing since then, it has seen a lot of action in recent times. In December last year, Porsche brought in the Cayenne Coupe, and in January 2020, Audi launched its flagship Q8. Both these cars are almost similarly priced. Let’s take a closer look at what each one brings to the table.
Engine
The Audi Q8 and the Porsche Cayenne Coupe share more in common than just body styles. Both cars are based on the Volkswagen Group’s MLBevo platform and are powered by a 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged petrol motor. In fact, at 335bhp, their power outputs are identical too. The Audi, however, develops its peak at 5,000rpm in comparison to the Porsche's 5,300rmp. At 500Nm, the Q8 makes 50Nm more than the Cayenne Coupe, though. Although both cars come paired with an 8-speed automatic, the Q8’s transmission is a torque converter while the Porsche has been fitted with a dual-clutch unit.
As far as performance goes, the Q8 does the 0-100km/h dash in 5.9 seconds – just one-tenth of a second faster than the Cayenne Coupe. The additional 50Nm of torque that the Q8 has over the Cayenne Coupe is somewhat compensated by the 85kg weight advantage that the latter gets. The Q8 can, however, record a marginally better top-speed of 250km/h – the Cayenne Coupe maxes out at 243km/h.
Brakes and suspension
As far as brakes are concerned, the Q8 sports 375mm discs at the front and 350mm ones at the rear. The Cayenne Coupe, on the other hand, gets 350mm and 330mm discs at the front and rear, respectively. Both cars get air suspension and 20-inch wheels as standard – both carmakers also have larger wheels on offer as optional extras.
Features
Feature-wise, the Porsche Cayenne Coupe gets the longer list of standard equipment than the Audi Q8. Before we get into that, let’s get the common features out of the way first. Both cars get LED lighting, leather upholstery, front and rear parking sensors, touchscreen infotainment, cruise control, anti-glare mirrors and more. A few features that the Porsche flaunts, however, are either missing from the Q8 or not available as standard. For instance, the Cayenne Coupe gets a central differential lock, a head-up display, and ventilated seats with massage function as standard, all of which are optional extras on the Q8. The Audi offering does, however, make up some of the lost ground in terms of practicality. It gets cup holder at the front and rear, a cooled glove box, and most importantly electrically adjustable steering wheel.
