Audi is working on a new sub compact car that is designed to be environmentally friendly
The compact car market is gaining more and more significance around the world while it is the biggest passenger car segment in India. Not too long ago Audi had confirmed that it will be developing an even smaller SUV in the form of the upcoming Q2 model that will be based on the A1’s PQ25 platform which forms the base for many compact cars from the Volkswagen group.
The new sub compact planned by Audi though will be even smaller than the A1 and will in fact be built on the NSF platform used by the Volkswagen Up! sub compact car. And with the development of the e-Up! all electric model, the platform is designed to accommodate lithium ion batteries as well. The new compact Audi will be availed only with the choice of either a petrol engine or an all-electric drivetrain. The petrol engine will be a 1.0 litre three cylinder engine that also does duty in the VW Up! The car will be a front wheel drive model only.
Audi will avail its new sub compact car with a choice of three door and five door models. There is also likelihood of a rugged looking version of the new compact car with lower body cladding and raised ride height.
In the past, Audi has showcased a few all electric concept cars and the new sub compact car will be the result of all those developments and concepts when it goes into production.
Audi’s new sub compact car will allow it to enter a segment below where it is currently operating allowing it to expand its market base and capitalize on its brand appeal.
