For the first time in the Indian market, a luxury carmaker – Mercedes – sold more than 11,000 cars but the happiness was short-lived as fellow German carmaker – Audi – finished the year selling 79 cars more.
The battle for the top slot in the luxury car market in India is getting steamier and steamier. Where Mercedes released its sales figures a few days ago stunning everyone by selling over 11,000 cars in one financial year, Audi followed suit and told the folks at Mercedes that it’s still not over.
Where Mercedes-Benz claimed a sales figure of 11,213 units in the Indian market in FY 2014-15, Audi claimed to sell 11,292 units which is 79 more than Mercedes’s figures and 11.51% more than what it sold in FY 14. However, the sales figures from January to March tell a different story. Where Mercedes-Benz sold 3,566 units in the first quarter of this calendar year, Audi didn’t do as expected and sold 3,181 units across India. This move is also significant for Mercedes as the numbers registered in Q1 this year mean a 40% growth over Q1 sales last year.
Both these luxury carmakers are trying to lure the Indian market by launching new models in quick succession. Where Mercedes-Benz launched various new models in the recent past, it also plans to add more cars to its portfolio in the near future. Mercedes had earlier announced that it will launch 15 new models in India in the year 2015 out of which five have already been launched. New models to arrive include cars like the S-Class, the ML-Class, the GL-Class and the newly launched CLA-Class. Audi’s plans include launching 10 new models this year which will start with selling the new TT this month. This shall be followed by the launch of the next-gen Q7 which is also Audi’s flagship SUV.
