Italian design-house Zagato and Aston Martin have unveiled the new Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato concept. The car will make its debut at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este at Lake Como in Italy on May 21, 2016.
UPDATE on 23/06/2016: Aston Martin has confirmed that it will be putting the Vanquish Zagato concept into production. However, only 99 units will be made and all are already spoken for.
The Vanquish Zagato is the fifth car that has come from the 50-year long collaboration of the two marquees. The first being the DB4 Zagato from 1960, the last time the two brands collaborated it resulted in the birth to the V12 Vantage Zagato in 2011.
The Vanquish Zagato Concept was designed by Aston Martin’s design team led by Marek Reichman and Andrea Zagato and his team of designers in Milan. The car was developed at Aston Matin’s facility in Gaydon England. The new bodywork is made completely of carbon fibre and use of large one-piece panels helped reduce weight and panel split lines. The rear tail lamps have been redesigned completely in true Zagato circular rear lights with the same bladed LED technology found in the Aston Martin Vulcan track only monster hypercar.
Reichman said 'Over the years, we have developed and refined our own design language and we have always gone that little bit further with our special series cars like CC-100, One-77 and Aston Martin Vulcan. The Vanquish Zagato Concept shows how our two companies can come together and push the definition of Aston Martin design.'
'We pride ourselves on our strong partnership and the creation of the Vanquish Zagato Concept was a true shared experience,' says Zagato's CEO, Andrea Zagato, 'it represents the essence of an important design relationship that dates back over fifty years.'
The Vanquish Zagato takes cues from some of Aston Martin’s recent iconic cars like the ORVMs of the One-77 with a sculpted rear end similar to the DB11 with a retractable spoiler and rear hatch for access to the luggage compartment with a massive diffuser at the bottom. The rear also gets quad-exhausts with more carbon fibre inserts around it.
Derived from the Aston Martin CC-100, the classic side strake begins from the wheel arch to the door just like the new DB11. The roof also features a double bubble, a Zagato trademark feature from the early 1950s, which originated from the need to accommodate racing helmets with minimum impact on aerodynamics. To power the Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato, Aston Martin has used the same V12 engine from the standard Vanquish tuned to develop 600hp.
