Search giant Google has been working on its self-driving car for quite some years now. And if rumours from an array of international media outlets are to be believed, Apple is set to give its chief mobile OS rival a run for its money with its own electric(and possibly self-driving) car.
With $178 billion in cash reserves and an intense desire to topple $1 trillion in market capitalization, automotives might well be the next industry where the Cupertino based company has set its sights on.
Such rumours have been stemmed by the recent signing of former Mercedes-Benz R&D chief Johann Jungwirth. Jungwirth has been associated with Daimler since 1997 and has prior experience of in the field of autonomous driving, voice recognition, among others.
Apple fans boys are likely to cherish an iCar(or whatever term the iPhone maker comes up with), for it can offer seamless connectivity with their mobiles and tablets.
Further, the Fortune 500 company may transfer its mobile technology into roads cars. 'Siri' can take in-car voice recognition to a whole new level. And for those who have a habit of forgetting their car keys at home while rushing to office, how about ‘unlocking’ your car with your fingerprints?
It might be a few years until we see Apple branded cars hit the streets. But the idea clearly has the potential and the necessary backing to see the light of day. Whether people will break free from their old regime and whether this car will have an edge over similar attempts by tech rivals Google and Sony, however, remains to be seen.
