Tata has launched the all-new Safari at a starting price of Rs 14.69 lakh, which’s Rs 70,000 more than the base price of the Harrier. The Safari is offered in 7 trims, with a single 2.0-litre diesel motor and two transmission options

After a long wait, Tata has finally launched the all-new Safari. Tata first showcased the Safari as the Buzzard concept at the Geneva Motor Show in 2018 and then pulled the wraps off the near-production version as the Gravitas at the Auto Expo 2020. The Gravitas was re-christened as the Safari earlier this year. The Safari has finally been launched at a starting price of Rs 14.69 lakh for the base XE variant. The top-of-the-line XZA+ Adventure Edition carries a sticker price of Rs 21.45 lakh. All prices ex-showroom.

The top-spec Adventure Edition sports some cosmetic changes over the standard variants. This special edition model gets an exclusive Tropical Mist Blue paint shade and a brown & white interior colour scheme. The grille and the alloy wheels get a black treatment.

On the inside, the Safari comes with 6 and 7 seat options – the top-end variants only come with the latter. In terms of interior design, much of it looks identical to the Harrier, with the exception of the interior upholstery. Equipment-wise, the Safari comes with an electronic parking brake, panoramic sunroof, Xenon HID headlights, an 8.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 7.0-inch driver display and more.

While the Safari is based on the same Omega Arc platform that also underpins the Harrier, it is, however, 63mm longer that helps it accommodate a third row of seats. The Safari is also 80mm taller than the Harrier. Powering the Safari is the same 2.0-litre diesel engine that develops 168bhp and 350Nm. This engine is mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

The Tata Safari competes with the likes of the MG Hector Plus and the Mahindra XUV500. Hyundai and Jeep are also expected to bring in 7-seater iterations of the Creta and Compass, respectively.
