2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA: Highlights
The new CLA will succeed the A-Class as Mercedes’ entry sedan, featuring the brand’s latest MMA platform, which is designed to support both electric and internal combustion powertrains. This flexible platform will also be used for a range of upcoming models, including two new SUVs.
The premium German carmaker will launch an all-electric CLA, featuring a rear-mounted motor delivering 268bhp, paired with a two-speed transmission. An optional all-wheel-drive system will add a 107bhp electric motor to the front axle, which will only activate when necessary, helping to extend the range by decoupling. The electric motor will support 320kW DC fast charging and leverage 800-volt technology. It is expected to be equipped with an 85kWh battery, offering a range of approximately 750 km. The use of silicon oxide anodes in the battery will further enhance energy efficiency.
Furthermore, the CLA will still offer an internal combustion engine (ICE) option due to rising demand. It will feature a new 48-volt mild hybrid system, paired with the M252 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo engine operating on the Miller cycle. Mercedes-Benz claims this petrol engine will provide efficiency comparable to diesel, potentially leading to the discontinuation of diesel variants. The engine will be coupled with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and a 27bhp electric motor. The hybrid system will include a 1.3kWh battery, and the ICE CLA will primarily be front-wheel-drive, with an optional AWD system.

To improve efficiency, Mercedes-Benz is equipping the CLA with an air-to-air heat pump that recycles heat from the motor, battery, and ambient air. This system enables cabin heating in colder weather without relying heavily on the HVAC system, which tends to use more power in electric vehicles. The technology draws inspiration from the VISION EQXX, which similarly focused on energy-saving solutions to optimise overall energy consumption.
A major highlight for North American buyers is the CLA’s compatibility with both CCS and Tesla’s NACS charging systems. This feature positions the CLA as one of the earliest EVs to offer this level of flexibility, granting drivers access to Tesla’s widespread Supercharger network, which includes over 50,000 fast-charging stations across the U.S. Capable of delivering speeds up to 250kW, the Superchargers allow for quicker charging, making long journeys more convenient and efficient.
