The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, a tough off-road behemoth introduced in 1979, has gone electric with the G 580. This new model comes equipped with EQ technology. In many respects, this is the firm's most prestigious vehicle; its exclusivity and presence are valued more highly than its performance. Therefore, going electric is not just an important turning point for the venerable —it's also the largest test to date for the company's recently retracted electrification plans. In terms of power and off-road capability, the first electric G-Class not only matches but surpasses its internal combustion engine competitors.
2025 Mercedes-Benz G 580: Mechanical Details
The new Mercedes-Benz G 580 has four motors with a combined output of 580bhp. This configuration not only improves the car's off-road performance but also enables special features like G-steering, which provides a more precise turning circle on difficult terrain, and G-turn, which enables the vehicle to turn instantly. There's also a crawl function with three settings.
The model, which integrates zero emissions and advanced features while maintaining the rugged, angular appearance of the classic G-Class, represents a major turning point in the development of premium off-road vehicles. According to WLTP standards, the G 580's 116kWh lithium-ion battery can propel it to about 471.5 kilometres between charges. The 0 to 100km/h acceleration time stands at 4.6 seconds with a top speed of 180km/h. DC charging at rates of up to 200 kW is possible allowing for a 10-80% charge in a little over 30 minutes.
The suspension is also suitable for off-roading. Each corner has adjustable dampers, and the front is equipped with an independent setup while the back uses a solid axle. The breakover, approach, and departure angles are 20.3, 30.7, and 32 degrees, respectively, while the ground clearance is 249mm.
2025 Mercedes-Benz G 580: Platform and Design
The G 580, like the other G-class models, is built upon the conventional ladder frame, a design that is typical of trucks and off-road vehicles. More significantly, it appears quite identical to the 2025 G-Class facelift. The carmaker has made a few minor design changes, the most prominent of which is the addition of a black grille and unique, EQ-only lighting. Other alterations, such as comparatively more rounded corners are almost invisible and allow this SUV's striking form to cut through the wind more smoothly. The G 580 rides on standard 18-inch five-spoke wheels with a gloss finish. The model also sports a spoiler on the back edge of the roof, silver 'EQ' badges, and a branded storage box for charging cables.
2025 Mercedes-Benz G 580: Features
On the feature front, Mercedes-Benz has incorporated enhanced off-road-oriented driver-assist systems. You can get important information for off-road driving on the infotainment screen and gauge cluster. It displays data regarding the location of the car, the tyre pressure, steering angle, and more. Additionally, there is a function called Transparent Hood that uses a surround-view camera system to show what's underneath the engine compartment. This can be useful for both off-roading and manoeuvring around tricky turns. A Burmester 3D surround sound system, ambient lighting, and temperature-controlled cup holders are present as well.
The model is scheduled to go on sale at a starting price of USD 152,715 (about Rs 1.27 crore). Upon launch, a unique Edition One model with more standard features and unique design aspects will be available for a little over USD 200,000 (around Rs 1.66 crore).
