Even before its global debut, the 2024 Volvo EM90, an all-electric luxury MPV, has made it to the news. It started with a single teaser image giving us a sneak peek at the model from the top, showing a dual sunroof, a raked front windscreen, T-shaped taillamps, and sliding rear doors. Now, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has published a few homologation certification images on its website that reveal the upcoming MPV's exterior design for the first time, and we must say, it looks nearly identical to the Geely-owned Zeekr 009 that debuted last year. Based on the Chinese automaker's SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) electric vehicle platform, the Zeekr 009 minivan is equipped with dual electric motors offering four-wheel-drive and making a combined 536bhp – sufficient for a 0 to 100km/h time of 4.5 seconds. Coming back to the Volvo EM90, the luxury vehicle is set to be officially revealed on November 12, 2023. It will be manufactured in Zhejiang, China.

2024 Volvo EM90 EV: Exterior Design
Given that the 2024 Volvo EM90 appears to be a rebadged version of the Zeekr 009, the recent images released show that the EM90 will share its boxy silhouette, body panels, and proportions with the Zeekr. Even the profile appears near-identical, with the exception of different alloy wheels measuring 19 inches or 20 inches (based on the trim level). That being said, Volvo's first minivan does receive certain design elements that are typical of the brand, such as 'Thor's hammer' LED headlamps, a closed-off grille with 'Volvo' logo, T-shaped LED daytime running lights, as well as bumper intakes that look somewhat similar to the ones on the EX90 SUV.
Meanwhile, the rear end gets an upright tailgate and comes fitted with T-shaped taillights with Volvo lettering. The interior details are under wraps, however, expect the EM90 to come with a three-row six-seater configuration, premium-grade upholstery options, individual chairs for the second-row occupants, etc.
2024 Volvo EM90 EV: Size/Dimensions
According to homologation documents, the Volvo EM90 measures 5,206mm in length, 2,024mm in width, and 1,859mm in height. The company's first-ever fully electric premium MPV tips the scales at 2,763 kilograms (kerb) and offers a wheelbase of 3,205mm. In comparison, the Zeekr 009's kerb weight sits at 2,830 kilograms, and is 5,209mm long, 2,024mm wide, and 1,867mm tall.
2024 Volvo EM90 EV: Powertrain
Positioned as a rival to the Lexus LM and the Buick GL8, the 2024 Volvo EM90 will feature a rear-mounted electric motor that belts out 264bhp, according to the MIIT website. Apart from this, the Swedish manufacturer will offer the all-wheel-drive setup as found on the Zeekr. Volvo's minivan gets a claimed top speed of 180km/h.
While the battery specifications are yet to be revealed, a larger 140 kWh CATL Qilin battery pack found on the Zeekr could make its way into the EM90. This battery unit is good for an 882km range (CLTC). A smaller 116-kWh pack with a range of 702km is also available.
