The all-new LBX, Lexus's smallest SUV model and the only one available with a hybrid drivetrain has made its official global debut today. The vehicle, which will be on sale in early 2024 in Europe, the UK, and a few other international countries, is essentially Lexus' take on the Toyota Yaris Cross. The initials LBX stand for Lexus Breakthrough Crossover, indicating that this model would be particularly significant for Europe, where it was created. Despite the fact that the LBX is clearly a subcompact SUV (B-SUV) and competes with the DS 3, Lexus calls it a small SUV. To be precise, the LBX is 305mm shorter than the Lexus UX and gradually longer than a Toyota Yaris Cross at 4,190mm in length, 1,825mm in width, and 1,545mm in height with a 2,580mm wheelbase.

Lexus LBX Compact SUV: Powertrain
It is important to note that the brand-new LBX SUV is built on the GA-B architecture that has "fundamentally adjusted to meet Lexus requirements" and is only available with a self-charging hybrid engine. In addition to two (for FWD) or three (for E-Four AWD) electric motors, an electronic CVT, and a NiMH battery pack, the 1.5-litre three-cylinder gasoline engine is also used. The total output is 134bhp and 185Nm. Intriguingly, this is 20bhp and 65Nm higher than the Toyota Yaris Cross's output. According to Lexus, the acceleration from 0 to 100km/h takes 9.2 seconds. The AWD receives a more advanced double-wishbone system, while the FWD models have a torsion beam rear axle.
Lexus LBX Compact SUV: Exterior Design
The style is distinct from the conventional form of the Lexus styling language. The spindle grille at the front has changed into a simpler central intake with a honeycomb design that blends into the bodywork. The short bonnet's aggressive LED headlamps are joined by a slim trim piece, and the lower bumper intakes contribute to the vehicle's sporty appearance. Premium finishes and discrete plastic cladding are used on the profile's wheel arches, and the glossy black trim piece on the C-pillar makes the greenhouse appear to be extended. The full LED taillights with sunglasses-inspired designs that accentuate the toned-up rear shoulders are the focal point at the back.
A rear spoiler, chrome highlights surrounding the faux bumper outlets, and an absence of an exhaust pipe are also noticeable. Options for personalisation received a lot of attention from Lexus. The three options available to customers are the entry-level LBX, the stylish Elegant / Relax (monotone exterior, glossy 18-inch wheels), and the sporty Emotion / Cool (bi-tone exterior, machined 18-inch wheels), each of which has a unique interior upholstery arrangement.
Lexus LBX Compact SUV: Interior and Features
Coming to the interior, owing to features like the inclined centre console, ambient lighting, and the choice of luxury upholstery materials like semi-aniline leather, Ultrasuede, or vegan-friendly alternatives, the Lexus seems more upscale and technologically advanced than the Toyota, which is more mechanically focused. The Lexux Link Connect infotainment system, which supports wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto connectivity, integrates a 9.8-inch touchscreen, a head-up display, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster in the cockpit.
Thanks to the included Lexus Safety System + ADAS suite, the segment's level of safety equipment is rather substantial. There are 13 speakers, including a subwoofer, in the Mark Levinson audio system which is optional. Additionally, Lexus is proud of the NVH levels of the Lexus LBX, which features a tonne of more insulation. Due to the extra hardware on the back axle, the AWD variant's load capacity is somewhat less than the FWD version's 332-litre.

Lexus LBX Compact SUV: Launch Timeline
The Lexus LBX will start production in late 2023, with initial sales starting in early 2024, primarily for European markets. The first batch of right-hand-drive LBXs is scheduled to arrive in March 2024, and Lexus will begin taking orders in the UK in July. In addition, Australia is a strong contender to be one of the "selected global markets" for the Lexus LBX, however, the firm says the choice "will be made at a later stage."
